Just some words from the artist...
"I chose to highlight anorexia, a misunderstood psychological disorder that is on the increase due to constant pressure from the media. Many people offer their 'expert' advice and simply tell sufferers to eat more. They don't understand the complexity of the disorder. It's a battle between mind and body that produces devastating consequences. If an anorexic is able to control their food intake and achieve a victory for their mind, they still lose due to the punishment inflicted on their body. If they eat more to reduce the effects on their body their mind is punished and they feel depressed and isolated. Either way they can't win. I wanted my design to reflect this constant battle as well as showing how fragile sufferers can be both mentally and physically." |
Critical Questions- Answers
(Ai) Analyze and explain the lines: "My mind is victorious", "My body defeated"
Explain the lines.
Anorexia is making the anorexic refusing/restricting to eat, and feel happy for not eating. While in contrast, the body's system had to suffer because of starvation, making it weak and scaly.
(Aii) Taking the perspective of the lady in skins and bones (anorexic), suggest some of the feelings the author intended to show.
Taking the perspective of an anorexic, the complexity of the disorder cause a contradiction between the mind and body, amid confusion for the anorexic.
(Aiii) The artist drew only the body of a lady, making it looking unappealing to many. Explain briefly about her eating disorder and the impacts caused on her outward appearance. (hint: you may refer to the monologue at the bottom right
corner)
She is anorexic(person diagnosed with anorexia): uncontrollable starvation due to restriction/rejection of food for a long period of time. This resulted her to have ruin mainly her body: scaly and body only left with skin and bones, visible rib bones, brittle and fragile dry pale skin, many frequent bruises all over her body. All in all, her body looks weak and defeated.

The author referred to anorexia as a "misunderstood psychological disorder that is on the increase due to constant pressure from the media..." because
a) It has been influencing/brainwashing the people who wanted to have a "perfect, skinny" body through social networking sites, fashion and body magazines; which have been causing some of them to attempt to being anorexic just to lose pounds and pounds to attain their desired weight, which might be unreasonably little.
The public doesn't really know the damages and impacts it would do to one's body, and there are two sides:
b) the public misunderstand that it is as simple as just a food disorder with meaning to say that patients just need to eat more to overcome it, but it requires much more than one's strong willpower to even eat something. This causes the public to think that the consequences are just losing weight - overcoming it by eating more; like taking pills to cure flu.
c) Public may misunderstand that the illness is great to get. To even the anorexia/anorexic patients, they might adopt the wrong perspective that this illness is "worthy" and "good" after diagnosed with it because they might think it would help them to take a toll in their body's weight (weight loss) in a relatively short amount of time, perfect their body shapes and reach their desired weight, making them feel happy and confident with their bodies. This is evidently shown in the visual stimulus whereby a woman severely underweight due to anorexia yet whose T shirt wrote: this is how I define beautiful.
However in reality, anorexia would not only result them to eventually reach an unhealthy underweight body leaving them skin and bones, but also other subsequent illness: malnutrition, more starvation, mentally unstable, depression etc. you name it. This would eventually lead not able to stop and control themselves as the illness prolongs, it takes much more than one's strong willpower to overcome it-to halt the weight loss and even eating food. Therefore, I turns out to be a serious psychological disorder rather than a food disorder.
(C) Hence, what impact does the artist wish to tell the audience? [purpose/aim of poster]
His design is to reflect this constant battle as well as showing how fragile sufferers can be, both mentally and physically, as they are susceptible to many physical and mental illnesses.
